Massey's Chapel

Congregation Snapshot

What is Massey’s Chapel like?
We worship Sundays at 11:00 AM in our historic sanctuary.
In appearance, the building might remind you of your grandparents’ church.

But even though the church was founded in 1855, Massey’s is not your grandparents’ church! Our members are diverse racially, economically, and politically. Our pastor is a woman. New members tell us they were attracted by the warmth of the congregation, and many of our members are relatively new to the church.
You could describe our worship services as traditional and casual. People dress up and dress down. You might see women wearing dresses or jeans or shorts. Some men wear suits; most do not. You’ll see a lot of sneakers. Some of our women like to wear scarves and hats.
We sing the old hymns, but they are jazzed up and lively. Sermons seldom last more than 15 minutes. Most worship services last 45 minutes or less. We celebrate Communion the first Sunday of each month.

We have adult Bible studies throughout the year, and we enjoy congregational potluck lunches several times a year.
Massey’s Chapel has a pollinator garden of native plants that is open to the public. Come check it out!

We have a prayer shawl ministry, and our knitters also make prayer squares. One of our members makes prayer beads. We give them to anyone who would be blessed by one. Know of someone who could use a prayer shawl, prayer square or prayer beads? – contact Pastor Laure, lkalau@nccumc.org.
Massey’s Chapel financially supports the Parktown Food Hub (food pantry), and we have partnered with Epworth UMC in Durham to help support a local family of refugees
We share our fellowship hall (which we call “The Cabin”) with three groups of Alcoholics Anonymous. One of our members leads a weekly tai chi group in the cabin.
The church also has seasonal ministries. Last year, we provided Christmas gift cards to the Methodist Home for Children in Raleigh.
Do you have questions? Feel free to contact Pastor Laure at lkalau@nccumc.org.
